Still not sure if Physical or Occupational Therapy is for you?

Perhaps these FAQs will help you decide.

  • What is Physical Therapy?
Physical Therapy is a medical, hands-on approach to relieving pain and restoring function. Physical Therapists are medical experts in musculoskeletal conditions and work closely with physicians. Our Physical Therapists evaluate your movement patterns, identify the cause of your pain, and work to eliminate it. While every patient’s condition and pain is unique, your physical therapist will use a variety of gentle hands-on techniques, exercises, and equipment to relieve pain quickly and restore your function to optimum levels. The overall goal is to restore pain-free mobility and function and to prevent the injury or pain from recurring.
  • What is Occupational Therapy?
Occupational Therapists have a holistic approach, so their treatments may focus on physical rehabilitation (range of motion, strengthening), figuring out appropriate accommodations, making necessary modifications, working with both the patient and the family, or a variety of other areas. At the core, Occupational Therapists focus on "occupations" and no, this does not necessarily refer to your job. "Occupation" refers to the tasks that are meaningful to you. In most settings, Occupational Therapists focus on particular occupations called activities of daily living (ADLs) - things like dressing, bathing, cooking, grooming, toileting, and transferring from one surface to another. However, the variety of occupations that they help people return to is as varied as the people they treat.
  • How do I know if Physical or Occupational Therapy will help me?
Working with you and your doctor, we can discuss your options and help determine if Physical or Occupational Therapy will be the right choice for you.
  • Will it hurt?
While there can be some element of discomfort and soreness associated with both Physical and Occupational Therapy, our culture is centered around respecting your pain and listening to your body. There are many techniques that are used to regain motion and strength. Good communication with your therapist will help minimize any discomfort. We want you on your way to quick pain relief and back to normal activities.
